JV Coach Brett Schlekeway

Brett Schlekeway is in his 7th season with the Washington Warriors girls basketball program. He teaches the World History Classes at Washington. Schlekeway was named the 2009 South Dakota Coaches Association “Assistant Coach of the Year”.
Prior to working with the girls at Washington High, Coach Schlekeway was the head softball coach and assistant basketball coach at Columbus High School in Columbus, Nebraska and was an assistant with the Washington High School boy's basketball program for three seasons including the 2003 state championship team. In his career, Schlekeway has been an assistant coach for 3 state championship teams.
Originally from Sioux Falls, SD, Coach Schlekeway is a graduate of South Dakota State University and the University of Sioux Falls. He and his wife Lori and have four children: Noah, Miranda, Arianna, and Jonah.
Sophomore Coach Larry Toft

Larry Toft is in his 4th year on the girls basketball staff at WHS. The WHS sophomore team has won the Sioux Falls City Sophomore tournament in 2009 and 2010. He teaches physical education at Hayward Elementary in Sioux Falls.
Coach Toft brings a wealth of coaching experience including stops at Canistota, Egan, Montrose, West Central, West Lyon-IA, and SF Roosevelt. He was an assistant coach on 7 state championship girls basketball teams and 1 state championship boys team during his tenure at Roosevelt. Coach Toft and Coach Malchow spent 4 years together as assistant coaches on the RHS girls basketball staff. In his career, Toft has been an assistant coach for 10 state championship teams.
A Luverne, MN native, Coach Toft is a graduate of Dakota State University. He is married to Karen, and has 2 grown children.
Freshman Coach Gretchen Johnson

Gretchen Johnson is in her 5th year as freshman GBB coach at WHS. She teaches physical education at Memorial Middle school in Sioux Falls.
Coach Johnson is a graduate of WHS, and played basketball for the Warriors. She then went on to play collegiate basketball at Dakota Wesleyan University (where they qualified for the NAIA national tournament) and Minnesota State-Moorhead. Coach Johnson completed an Ironman Triathlon in Madison, Wisconsin in 2009. She has been an assistant coach for 2 state championship teams.
Coach Johnson is a graduate of Minnesota State-Moorhead University.
Head Coach Nate Malchow

Nate Malchow is in his 6th year as Head Girls Basketball Coach at Washington High School. The Warriors went 18-5 and won the 2010 State AA Championship. The Warriors also claimed the 2008 State AA Championship and the 2009 State AA Consolation Championship. Washington has won the Greater Dakota Conference Championship in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 and also are the 2008, 2009, and 2010 District 2 Champions. Malchow was named the 2008 South Dakota Coaches Association “Girls Basketball Coach of the Year”. In 2008 and 2009 he was also named “Girls Basketball Coach of the Year” for the Greater Dakota Conference. His career record at WHS stands at 75-42. Malchow serves on the Board of Directors of the South Dakota Coaches Association. He teaches Health and Physical Education at WHS.
Before coming to WHS, Malchow was an assistant girls basketball coach at SF Roosevelt High School under Coach Fred Tibbetts. During his tenure as an assistant, RHS claimed state championships in 2001 and 2005. Serving as the freshman girls coach, his teams claimed four straight Sioux Falls City A Championships from 2001-2005. Malchow was also an assistant boys basketball coach for 1 year, and an assistant track and field coach at RHS for 4 years, where he coached a state champion in the High Jump.
Coach Malchow spent the 2000-2001 year as a student assistant coach with the men’s basketball team at South Dakota State University under Coach Scott Nagy. The squad qualified for the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.
Coach Malchow, an Aberdeen, SD native, is a graduate of Concordia College-Moorhead where he played basketball and served as team captain his senior year. He has a Master’s degree in Athletic Administration from South Dakota State University, and will graduate in Summer 2010 with a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of Sioux Falls. Coach Malchow and his wife, Sarah, have a daughter Macie (4).
Volunteer Assistant Coach Todd Alberty
Todd Alberty is in his 2nd season as an assistant with the WHS girls basketball program. He teaches 7th grade social studies at Whittier Middle School.
Coach Alberty is a graduate of Ellsworth High School in MN. He went on to play collegiate basketball at the University of Sioux Falls. Alberty has been an assistant coach on 1 state championship team.
Alberty is a graduate of the University of Sioux Falls, along with his wife Kelsey.
